DO: let people know when youre back. If youre back the day after the email is sent the chances are that person can and will wait for your return

Sorry to be controversial but just because you have children doesnt mean you have first dibs at all the school holiday time. If Lola is getting married in August and she books her time off before you, youll have to have your two weeks in Benedorm another time Karen. Sorry to be brutal but your issues are not company issues. Similarly, if you can only take holiday at a certain point, then you should respectfuly ask your co workers if they can cover you for a specidic time period.

Quick Wins - Are you falling down?

I defy anyone to tell me that there are no opportunities for quick wins in their day to day. Why are so many of us failing to tick these off our to do lists and letting them spill over day by day? Its because youre not organised. Youre not focused and youre not good at compartmentalising.

So youre placing importance on the things that you believe you are getting noticed or paid for. But let me tell you a secret. Imagine a dance crew on stage at X Factor or a ballerina with a small part in swan lake who is always placed at the back. They still need to deliver and be as on point as the lead dancers in the front row. Are you seeing my point?

There may and will always be someone paying attention. And what theyre seeing is that youre point pointing your toes, youre not standing straight, youre not smiling.

Friends and Colleagues

Having a work bestie is amazing. It’s that one person that can feel like theyre on your wavelength and you can discuss anything workplace related with but can be yourself morre. Some people usually those with people pleasing tendencies however can sometimes get frustrated or upset when they dont find a cliquqe. I’ve been in both camps. Working in a role and not feeling like you have any allies can feel a little isolating but relationships can take time. Consider being a joiner..

You mental health is as important as your physical health. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. Everyone has days where they feel completely RUBBISH and sometimes getting up and getting on with it helps override the blues. But what if youre carrying around a little more sadness. First of alll, sometimes you need a douvet day. I dont think this is wrong advice. Sometimes taking a time out for yourself to sleep in, watch movies, clean, go running, cook, read, can be the tonic you need. Maybe you even need two days. We talk about burn out later but this could stop you reaching burn out. Lets also talk about mental health. Maybe youre going through a break up, caring for children, a parent, maybe your relationship is going through a rough patch, maybe youre just feeling unfulfilled, maybe its hormonal, maybe things havent felt like theyre goign your way and youre just teary or angry or fed up. Taking a couple of days sick and labelling as ‘unwell’ is aceptable. If queried you can always say you had toothache. What if its more serious… 2 weeks and getting help in another section..

You are perfectely entitled to take a sick day when you are not feeling 100%. You have to set boundaries. You are an adult. If you are in an organisation where there is a formal procedure for calling in sick then follow this to a tee and do not rise to any catty or undgnified comments.
